This prelude came to be out of a compositional etude. The goal was to write a piece with "harmonic stasis", that is to say a piece were sounds linger and bar lines are not so strongly felt. To me a concept like that naturally involved cluster chords or playing every key I could get under my forearm. The cluster chords represent a thunder-like effect while intervals play out in the high register of the piano. The middle of section of the piece plays a bit more with poly-tonality and smaller clusters.
I was fortunate enough to be able to perform this piece myself at this Fall's Composer's Forum. I am always very nervous, especially when performing solo, but I feel very happy with my performance here. I intended for the piece to be ambiguous in meaning so I would love to hear any impressions from listeners.
